Mass Effect 2

So I've finished my first playthrough of ME2, and I have to say it's really great.

I'll avoid spoilers here, but the story is very satisfying and quite well done. They've gotten rid of all the bits and pieces of inventory you had to deal with in ME1, and streamlined leveling as well. You have four skillsets on a geometric increase. This captures the essential spirit of the upgrade points in ME1 without giving you thirty different skills and a lot of clicking to assign points.

If you don't import an ME1 game, I think you're missing a lot. Fortunately Penny Arcade linked an ME1 savegame repository, and I daresay there will be an ME2+ME1 savegame repository when ME3 comes out. They did a great job of integrating ME1 storyline (and the differences in various choices) without it affecting the main storyline much.

Even the quicktime events were done well. Which sounds strange, but it's (for the computer) only left-mouse and right-mouse buttons, and they correspond to Renegade or Paragon options you can take during some cutscenes. It doesn't really affect the overall story (they're not 'press x to not die') but does affect conversation options and your renegade/paragon levels.

Finally, they did a nice job of advancing some background plots - the quarian and the geth, the genophage and the Krogan. Sadly, you don't get to see a quarian face. And no Hanar team member...maybe ME3?
